Philharmonia

4th - 8th Grade Strings and Percussion
String Orchestra is our intermediate ensemble allowing young string players to learn to play in an orchestral ensemble with  students of a similar age. Students experience fun and challenging repertoire while supported by coaches who play  alongside them in the orchestra.

When: Friday evenings 5:15-6:15 pm

Philharmonia Director, Shawn Berry

Shawn graduated from California State University Long Beach in 2020, receiving a
bachelor’s in music performance. Since moving to Orange County in 2020, he teaches
privately, coaches various ensembles, and performs throughout the county. He coached
the string sections of the String Orchestra, Symphony Orchestra, and the Chamber
Orchestra at San Clemente High School and is currently the Instructional Music Assistant at Newhart Middle School. He also coaches the cello sections of the Orange County Youth Symphony and String Ensemble.

Shawn is also an alumn
us of the Orange County School of the Arts and CYOSC. During his time with CYOSC, he performed in the Symphony, Solisti, coached the cello sections in Sinfonia and participated in a conducting internship under Mr. Gene Wie where he
conducted Symphony in a performance of the Overture of the Marriage of Figaro. He looks forward to leading Philharmonia in the upcoming 2025-2026 season.

Community Youth Orchestra of Southern California

CYOSC is a 501(c)3 non-profit public charity organization established in 1990 that presents innovative music education programs that serve students of all ages and ability levels, engages musicians in meaningful community service through mentorship, celebrates the artistic efforts of students, and fosters a positive collaborative environment for music-making that strives to unite people from many diverse backgrounds, identities, and experiences. We are first and foremost a program that focuses on the musical journey of the student, and meets the incredible challenges of empowering their learning with innovation and flexibility in the twenty-first century.
